Good morning my fellow PLUGgers,

The National Computer Center will be celebrating it's NCC-IT Month and they
allocated a one day sort of "Open Source Bazaar" and PLUG is the main
organization to handle this event. This will be held at the National
Computer Center, Diliman, Quezon City on June 26, 2002. NCC provided us the
following venue/resources:

- One (1) AVR with wide screen for 108 seaters. The AVR is good for Linux
and Open Source Advocacy only.

- Three (3) Computer Laboratories and 15 PCs for every lab. This is good
for our Technical/Hands-on/mini-Training/SIGs events.

- Three (3) Classrooms and 30 seaters each. Probably this will be used for
any displays that we have, like selling of distros, Linux desktops, etc.

In this regard, in behalf of the Philippine Linux Users' Group, I would like
to ask people to help us make this event a successful one. This is our
chance to advocate not just techie people but all types of sectors in the
community to be aware and even use Linux and other Open Source Software as
an alternative to the proprietary ones. This is also a chance to make our
government awake from a long time sleep of using proprietary softwares if
"convinced" is not the right word, at least they are more aware.

So much for this, I am requesting the "oldbies" to give a talk especially on
the ADVOCACY because this is where we will be convincing especially the
government sector to use Linux and other Open Source Software and we are
expecting an audience coming from the BSA (daw) and other "hardcore" users
of the "proprietary softwares".

Also, I am inviting speakers for the SIGs, Linux Basics, Basic xxx
Programming, etc. for the 3 Computer Laboratories to give a talk with
hands-on exercises or some sort.

And lastly, we need volunteers to help us work this event.

Anyway, below are some of the topics that I have in mind and please add,
remove, suggest, etc. na lang...

FOR THE ADVOCACY:
Venue: AVR

- Adoption of Linux and Open Source Software in the Government (Ian S., will
you take this?)
- Is Linux and OSS secured?
- Linux and OSS for Enterprise Computing
- Open Source: What is it all about? (Eric Pareja, will you take this?)
- Open Education (Doc Mana and/or Mr. Rommel Feria, will you take this?)
- Linux and OSS in the Health Sector (Dr. Cito Maramba, will you take this?)
- etc.

FOR THE TECHNICAL & NEWBIE TOPICS:
Venue: 3 Computer Laboratories

- Installation and Getting Started with Linux (Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian,
Slackware, SuSE, etc.)
- Basic Systems Administration
- Basic Networking
- Basic Security
- PHP Web Development
- Basic Bourne Shell Scripting
- Basic Perl Programming
- Basic Setup and Configuration of Apache
- Samba as PDC
- Postfix and/or qmail
- Bind 9 and/or djbdns
- vim and/or emacs
- etc.

I would like to call the attention of the following "oldbies" like:

- Dr. Pablo Manalastas
- Dr. Cito Maramba
- Mr. Randy Ong
- Mr. Orly Andico
- Mr. Dido Sevilla
- Mr. Migs Paraz
- Mr. William Emmanuel Yu
- Mr. Gino Ledesma
- Mr. Jijo Sevilla
- Mr. Meric Mara
- PLUG Officers and Board
- and others whom I forgot as of the moment...

...to please help us by simply be one of the speakers for this momentous
event.

If you are interested to help us, please e-mail me ASAP so that we can
arrange the event properly.

Thank you very much in advance.
