(Disclaimer: There may be local laws I know nothing about.) Sun Microsystems[1] distributed Star Office 5.2 as proprietary but free-of-charge software, which you could lawfully acquire on a Sun-created CD-ROM or by download directly from their Web/ftp site. You could also lawfully receive it as bundled software with some other software published by Sun's business partners, such as Linux-Mandrake. (I believe it's still available that way.) If you received your copy of SO 5.2 lawfully, you automatically received a non-transferrable license to use its components for almost any purpose. I have a copy of the licence text, here: http://linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/apps/sun-staroffice-5.2-licence I see nothing in that license prohibiting you from using pieces of the covered work elsewhere. Please note that this licence specifically _excludes_ permission to redistribute. There were and maybe still are a number of unauthorised places you could get SO 5.2 on-line from third-party ftp sites, and lots of people burned CDs for one another. Technically, all of these constituted copyright violation and voided the licence -- but Sun & concerned third parties didn't seem to care. Here's a (probably unauthorised) distribution point of v. 5.1a for Linux: http://www.cri.univ-rennes1.fr/pub/unix/soffice/ [1] In conjunction with authors/copyright-owners of some third-party components included in SO 5.2: fonts, the thesaurus, the spelling checker, Motif libraries, samples, templates, the copy of Software AG's ADABAS B database, and probably some of the printing code. -- Cheers, Rick Moen Never ask a sysadmin "What's up?"
