I am _so_ in love. Here are some of the ways that I'm using Emacs in
my daily life. Share your stories! I'd love to find out how you're
using Emacs to do something particularly cool. If you have any .el
files

I hope the vi users on the list don't flame me.

* GNUS

Gnus handles my mail. Remember all of those crossposts that I was
getting a little bit annoyed about? I only see one copy of a crosspost
now. I also discard all the duplicate mail I receive, which is a good
thing because I sometimes have mailing lists set to deliver mail to
more than one address because I haven't gotten around to tracking
those subscriptions down. =)

Gnus is way cool. It has all the features I looked for in mutt, and
then some.

* BBDB records

After using Emacs to store the contact information for people I know,
I decided that I wanted to use it to store info on the students in the
CS21A-A class for which I'm a teaching assistant. I used psql to
extract the information from my online submissions database. I wrote a
short Perl script to parse out their names, e-mail addresses and phone
numbers (appropriately tagged as Home or Mobile) and generate an Emacs
LISP file I then loaded into Emacs and M-x eval-buffer'ed. Now I can
hit M-x bbdb, type in a student ID, and get all of my notes on
them. This is very useful when getting in touch with students.

Am trying to figure out how to put inline ID pictures there. ;)
Will settle for having a Picture: field with the filename and being
able to view it simply by pressing a key.

* Archive support

I love being able to browse through archives in dired mode! No more
unpacking just to look at a single file. This is really helpful when
I'm looking at student submissions. <g>

* Image support

Just for kicks, I opened a .jpg in Emacs.

Beautiful graphics. Beautiful, beautiful graphics.

I downloaded another mode that taps into ImageMagic in order to
provide zoom in/out. Way, way cool.

* Keyboard macros

Keyboard macros are a lifesaver. They make boring, repetitive jobs fun
and easy. =)

* Elisp

I _love_ being able to write short snippets of elisp! I definitely
want to learn more about elisp.

* Grep

When you grep files, the results show up in another buffer - ready
to be selected! You can press <enter> on a line to have the file
brought up in another window, scrolled to the right line.

More Emacs stories to follow soon! =)
