My answer would be: it depends on the kind of Mac you have. I used Linux on Mac some few years ago on pre-G4 microprocessors (pre-PPC7400), and I was very impressed with the performance of Linux. It literally leaves dust for Mac OS 9.x and Mac OS X. But back then, there were several issues with binaries on PPC-Linux. The binaries were usually out of date, and the kernel (before the diff architectures were merged) was a hassle to deal with. It has significantly improved, however. If you have a more recent Mac, the levels of a G4 or better, I'd go for Mac OS X. You can install some Linux binaries through fink, and most work without a hitch. I have X Windows running side by side Aqua. There are some things that haven't been (completely) ported yet, however, such as KDE and OpenOffice. But its a start. However, I personally find it easier to maintain Linux on x86s. Give it a try and find out for yourself. I've tried LinuxPPC, YellowDog Linux, Mandrake Linux PPC, and Debian PPC. They all more or less work the same way (especially the first 3). -------------------------------------- Gino LV.
