Computer Training Labs and DDN ink Linux Productivity training deal

The Philippine arm of US-based Computer Training Labs (CTL) signed a
memorandum of agreement with Distributed Development Network (DDN) to
implement a training course focusing on Linux as an easy-to-use,
personal and office productivity platform.

"This course is designed to allow new Linux users to get to work right
away," explained Emmanuel Amador, director at DDN. "We introduce them to
Linux via a user-friendly graphical interface and the many useful office
productivity applications available for that platform."

Under the agreement signed early in July 2002, DDN will design the course
and provide the instructors and training materials for the course which
will be part of CTL's regular offerings. Classes will be held at CTL's
training facilities in Pasig.

The course makes use of the Caldera-based Lycoris Desktop/LX Linux
distribution. The Lycoris graphical desktop, on the other hand, is based
on the popular KDE interface. "With Linux, unlike Windows, users can
choose from a variety of graphical interfaces," Amador explained. "This
allows users to make the operating system adapt to the way they work
instead of the other way around."

Part of the course will also focus on OpenOffice, an MS Office workalike
productivity suite. OpenOffice can read and save to popular MS Office
formats such as those of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It also has its own
native document formats, and comes with an advanced 3D drawing
application.

The one-day training course is priced at P2,000 per student. A copy of
Lycoris Desktop/LX will be given, free of charge, to participants.

Interested parties may call CTL at 636-4381, 637-2453, and 687-1940.
Computer Training Labs is a Technical Training Center providing
comprehensive programs for vendor-based and vendor-neutral certification,
and is located at the 10th Flr. Agustin 1 Bldg. Emerald Ave. Ortigas
Center, Pasig City.

Linux is an open source operating system that runs on many computing
platforms such as on PCs, Macintoshes, and even IBM mainframes. Open
source software differs from traditional proprietary software in that the
source code, or programming, used to create the software, is made
available for the public and may even be modified and redistributed. Much
open source software is available at very low cost or even for
free. OpenOffice, an open source application, may be downloaded at no
charge from http://www.openoffice.org.

DDN is one of the leading Philippine companies that distributes,
implements, supports, and provides training in open source applications
and software.
