First of course is to check your logs. That should go without saying.
Everybody should read all their logs (or at least scan them or pass them
through grep or something) before wondering why anything happens.

That aside, it's highly likely that this is a standard POTS issue. The
quality of the lines may not be good enough, and somewhere along the
line things may just drop dead. Or maybe it's your modem: some are not
known to be as reliable as others for long-term connections. My
el-cheapo D-Link gets disconnected for wierd reasons, even if I'm sure
nobody picks up an extension on either end. I'm sure a USR Courier would
have been much more reliable.

If your connections get dropped at fairly regular intervals, though, you
may want to enable pppd debugging and watch your logs. Or set your
clients to auto-redial. Or both. ;)
