Hi,

Question: although I have not tried it yet but when installing
Windows-app on WINE, do you just run the .EXE file and everything
will be taken care of?

BTW, I thought Ateneo's MS license came from Ritchie Lozada. hehehe...

Subject: [plug] Wine and winword

After several days of trial and error, I have now gotten
wine to run winword.exe and all the other MS Office programs.
The trick is to use "compatible" versions of Windows and
MSOffice. Thus you need Windows 98 with Office 97, or
Windows 2000 with Office 2000, or Windows XP with Office XP.

During the trial and error period, I was using Windows 98
with Office 2000, and so I have been getting this dll "version"
compatibility error. After correcting this, wine was
able to run winword.exe smoothly -- I get the main word-processor
in a Motif window, and the help mascot (the paper-clip thing)
in another Motif window. As you worked on the word-processor,
the xterm where you started wine keeps spewing diagnostic and
error messages. All the features seem to work fine, except
file-save. Well, wine-20020804 is very much alpha software,
so we must all wait until it becomes stable enough to be usable.

Happy linuxing!

P.S. Don't ask where I get my Windows/Office software. All
I know is that my school, Ateneo de Manila, has paid Microsoft
Philippines a huge amount for the Ateneo site license to cover
the hundreds/thousands of copies in use at school.
