yup. that is the problem. you card is using a certain duplex mode while your switch is forcing a certain duplex mode. there is a documented bug with regards to using 3Com cards on CISCO switches and vice versa.
there is a tool in linux that can force cards to use a particular duplex mode without having to autonegotiate. i just forgot what it was.
