its not a pre-requisite. i know some people who have been introduced to computers via the linux route (usually somebody in the family is already using linux).since MS has a bigger market share in terms of desktop OS, majority of 'alternative OS' users would have to come from their userbase. :-)
one good thing about linux is that you _can_ learn the rationale/logic behind what a certain process do (like what happens when you fetch a webpage = go and install a webserver and find out, ok pretty lame example but i am not known to have a very creative imagination <g>) but it certainly isnt a requirement. ciao!
