In the interests of accuracy, I looked it up and
it's more wussy than non-existent. Compare:

http://dri.sourceforge.net/other/radeon_dri_features.html

versus

http://www.nvidia.com/docs/lo/1021/SUPP/README.txt

The 3D card companies seem loathe to release
low level hardware specs for their 3D chipsets
(we'll see if Trident and SiS can change the
general tune with their powerful DX8.1-conformant
chipsets) and that's why you don't get good open
source drivers for them.

Also, the hardware specs for the 3Dfx's SST
archictecture (Voodoo series) ARE available
somewhere in the bowels of the Internet so if
you're willing to live with old generation
3D acceleration (which is still actually very
good), you can muck around with the Voodoo3
internals under Linux to your heart's content.
