and another thing.. setting the TERM variable has nothing to do with what the terminal supports. we're talking about whether the remote machine has the TERM in its termcap.
'rxvt' for example is mostly a Linux-ism: an xterm with the Tektronix plotter support removed to save memory. most Sun/SGI/other UNIX don't know what an 'rxvt' is because they don't have it defined in their termcap. But they ALL know what an 'xterm' is.
