Mono, according to de Icaza is the port of the following .NET framework components (which he refers as the .NET framework, as opposed to the .NET program as a whole): 1. the .NET CLI virtual machine 2. additional libraries such as hash tables, XML manipulation, GUI tables, etc 3. the C# compiler I'll present my answers according to the context of the framework, as this is what Mono is about. Debating about the Microsoft-proposed .NET program might not be on-topic on this ML. > How will it impact Linux if this paradigm becomes widely used as > another open-source software development methodology? In the context of the framework, it's not another software development methodology. The .NET framework might be considered nearer to being another programming paradigm (or an extension of OOP). > Will it actually speed-up open source software development and provide even > greater reliability? Additional note: Bertrand Meyer has a nice article on the .NET framework [source: Software Developer's Magazine, Nov 2000] > When viewed in this light, is it worth sharing in Miguel's enthusiasm for the > MONO project? As far as I know, de Icaza posted a message regarding his points on the .NET framework and Mono, which was argued well point by point by Alan Cox on technical merits.
