                IBM launches Linux Scholar Challenge

"IBM Philippines has launched the 2002 Linux Scholar Challenge -- offering
universities across the world a chance to win their own IBM Linux Cluster."
"Designed to familiarize students with the open-source Linux operating
system and the working of the open source community, the contest provides
students a unique opportunity to work with Linux and IBM.
The University with the highest average score of student entries will be
awarded a Linux-enabled 16 node IBM eServer xSeries cluster. Twenty winners
of the Linux Scholar Challenge will receive IBM ThinkPad notebook computers.
Three qualified winners will be offered Summer 2003 internships at IBM's
Technology Center.
As part of the Challenge, students will submit projects to be reviewed by a
panel of IBM technologists. Participating students will create a Linux
project that enhances usability, develops an application, or tools for the
Linux environment. They will describe their objectives, methodology, research
and results.
Judging is based on creativity, thoroughness, clarity, and results of the
projects submitted. The best applications developed by students will be
selected as winners.
"IBM is strongly committed to Linux, the open source community, and open
standards. This contest is just another example of that dedication," said
Agnes Africa, IBM Philippines Learning Services Manager.
"We are working to encourage a generation of students who have adopted Linux
to make key contributions to the open source community. The University
Challenge allow students to have fun and be creative, while providing them
with an opportunity to improved their Linux skills and to improve Linux
itself."
        Other contest details include:
Students can select a Linux research or development project from a list of
examples provided on the entry web site, or select a comparable Linux project
that enhances usability, creates an application or develops tools for the
Linux environment.
Students develop a description of the objectives, methodology, and results
or conclusions obtained and submit a white paper (no more than three pages)
explaining the outcome. Students are encouraged to consult with others,
research the problem and use all open source resources to obtain results.
Contest winners are selected by an IBM panel of technologists from IBM
research, the IBM Linux Technology Center, and other knowledgeable linux
personnel.
Faculty sponsors for students, if members of the IBM Scholars Program,
will be provided with free access to IBM Software for use in teaching and
student projects. This includes such software as WebSphere and DB2 for Linux.
Students are responsible for arranging their own Linux environment for
their projects.
IBM is now accepting registrations online at

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/info/students/contests/linux

Contestants must be enrolled in college or university accredited by the
Commission on Higher Education and must complete the online registration by
October 31, 2002.
All papers must be submitted by Dec, 13, 2002. Winners will be announced on
Jan. 20, 2003
