Yes, it's possible that some program will build fine with one version of gcc, and not another. It's also possible, and probably more likely, that you're doing something wrong or are lacking a build dependency. However, it's difficult to speculate, given the lack of actual error information from you. Next time, if possible, post your question with as much relevant error information as you can manage. This probably means sending an email from the house, since you don't have the Linux development box you're using at work. Or you can manually copy the error messages onto a piece of paper, and type it out in your email from the office.
