I've been able to make RealOne work somewhat by configuring plugger (man plugger).  
Also had to:

move some files from the installing user's home dir (it was /root/Real I think since I 
installed as root, contained mostly .so files) to the install directory, and

put a symlink "Real" to the install dir in the non-root user's home

Still get a lot of "You don't have permission to upgrade blah blah" from a lot of 
sites, even when running as root.  Maybe now that Real is open-sourcing there'll be 
better linux support in the future.
