They're not the first to offer online material, some universities even offer online degrees. But they are the first to offer the material for free, with almost no conditions, and no deliberate omissions. Welcome to OpenCourseWare [http://web.mit.edu/ocw/]. I'm sure we've all heard of Opencola, which provided us with a free recipe for coke, but what actual use was that to us? Well in my opinion, not much. It was a big step forward and I applaud Opencola for what they did. But they have recently abandoned their previous ideals, and started to cash in on their success, and if I was feeling cynical I would say it was all just a marketing ploy. MIT is the first establishment (Outside computing) to actually offer something useful and free that could improve peoples lives, like Linux and many other open source projects have done for us.
