I honestly think those are all good.  Fluxbox too, judging by
reputation.  There are some others that use Scheme (the sort of modern 
version of Lisp) as their configuration language.  Some people really 
like those a lot.  scwm is one.

In a way.  My recollection is that the original developer of AfterStep
felt it had reached the limit of its potential, given its design.
(AfterStep is a special configuration of the fvwm window manager.)
So, he abandoned the project and started over from scratch with a fresh
codebase, which is now Window Manager.  Meanwhile, other people took
over maintenance of AfterStep.

Possibly the funniest book I've ever read.  I keep expecting that the
cassette tapes in my car will transmogrify into Queen recordings.
