Well, I used the kernel ACPI function, and what do you know, it worked! 
So that's what I'm using as of the moment.  But I'm still bothered that
APM no longer works in my system whereas it worked with the previous
kernel version.  Besides, I'm not too comfortable using experimental
kernel functions.  Maybe it's fine with ACPI, but still...

Anyone who had the same experience?
