Hi everyone,
Today I decided to revive a previous attempt of setting up rbldns for
internal use, instead of using Postfix's access file. I had previously
attempted this, but gave up after I couldn't figure out why all IP
addresses were blocked by both Postfix and rblcheck.
It turns out the problem was not with rbldns per se, but instead with a
little something in my tinydns configuration. On my systems I use the
really nifty wildcard feature of tinydns, so that *.free.net.ph resolves
to a given IP address unless otherwise specified. This is really great
for virtual hosts and the like.
I had configured tinydns to have an A record for dnsbl.free.net.ph to
point to my other computer running rbldns, for which reason tests using
dnsq, which polled dnsbl.free.net.ph for some address, worked fine.
Unfortunately by default, all queries for .free.net.ph are handled by
the main name servers, which because of the wildcard was giving out the
default address to all queries.
I solved the problem by replacing the line:
+dnsbl.free.net.ph:202.163.192.12
with
.dnsbl.free.net.ph:202.163.192.12:dnsbl.free.net.ph
and now things work really well.
Our server currently polls some other[1] public blacklists, but I still
get spam on my addresses and as reported by my users, which is what our
short (but growing) database at dnsbl.free.net.ph is for. It's public,
so those who want to use it may do so.
