I seem to have found the answer as soon as I sent off
the message (why does this always happen???):

man 4 vcs

Sounds a LOT simpler than messing around with ttys
and curses. 'Course someone is going to have to
build a widget library from scratch that takes
advantage of the vcsa device. Unless anyone
knows of something that already uses this...?

Is it just my imagination or does anything ESR gets
his hands on always end up becoming a complicated
piece of kludge (i.e. ncurses)?
