if you have perl installed:

perl �i.bak �p �e 's/this/that/g;' myfile

would do the same trick. The line above
search for the occurence of 'this' on myfile and
replaces it with 'that'.  The -i option lets you
create a backup for affected files. In our example
myfile.bak will be the backup file.
