What devices are you using? I have Slackware set up
on 2 machines. A dual Celeron 450 with a Voodoo 3 2000
and an ISA AWE64. The other one is a Duron 1.2Ghz with
an ECS K7S5A and its onboard Sis 7012 sound chip plus
a GeForce 4 Ti4200.

For the Nvidia and Voodoo drivers, I used the tar.gz
method. Was quite painless and I just followed the
xf86config mods mentioned in their READMEs. 3d
acceleration works great on both machines! If I had
tried to use the RH 6.1 specific rpms, it would likely
have been a lot more trouble.

Sound config was even easier, all I had to do was
uncomment or add a couple of lines to
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules. Had to read a K7S5A HOW-TO
to figure out what device to use for the Sis 7012
though. After that, the arTs server figured out
everything else automatically. I can get essentially
the same functionality out of my gfx and sound
hardware as I do under Windoze and that makes me
very happy with Slackware Linux.
