I understand the temptation. Really, I've been there.
The downside possibility is of the bad guys retaining multiple backdoor
ways to re-enter your system, continuing to subvert it, and continuing
to use it to attack other systems (or just wiping your system's hard
drive, at some unpredictable time). You'll not be able to exclude
this likelihood, unless you carefully rebuild and "change all the locks".
