They probably won't be affected by mailing list flames, either, and I
personally would rather filter out the netiquette-related stuff. I
usually score those threads down anyway.

Among other things. For example, I tend to score based on subject
rather than person, since I find that most of the time I want to
ignore whole threads of discussions. People with positive karma raise
the score of the thread, so I still read posts by people I find
interesting. =) The Gnus info node has some tips on even funkier
scoring - you can do a combination of author and body scoring, for
example. I'm quite tempted to score on the body for certain words like
"emacs"... ;)

This is how I manage to wade through around 75 mailing lists - 800 or
so messages every day... =)
