He's using tmpfs for /tmp. tmpfs uses some of your swap space to store
temporary files. Accessing files stored on a tmpfs is usually faster
compared to an normal fs.
BTW, according to the other post, he's using Solaris, which according to
Orlando, is using a tmpfs-like file system.
