Hi Aris,

I have been using the IBM Netfinity 5xxx line and AFAIK, the N5000 
(unlike the N5100) includes the IBM ServeRaid BIOS so you will have to 
configure the array first before you can use the drive. Yes, you can 
plug a SCSI drive on a live system since the N5000 supports hot swap 
technology but I doubt that you can use it immediately, unless IBM's 
ServeRaid utilities for Linux supports on-the-fly array configuration. 
What I usually do when I need to add another drive is to boot from the 
ServeRaid CD and configure the new drives from there.
