Thanks for the reply.  The problem in my case was the 63 sector offset that DM made.  
I needed a tool that could edit partitions down to the Heads and Sectors level.  I am 
not aware that parted had such a tool and besides my knowledge beyond cylinders is 
limited.  From my search on the Net I found utilities created by Svend Olaf Mikkelsen. 
 His findpart utility will help look for partition information for dos and linux.  
This is very handy if you mess up your partition table and you forgot to save a copy 
of your partition table.  With the author's help I was able to recover my linux 
partitions.
