If you are using an RPM based distro i _highly_ suggest you go "The RPM Way" (tm)(c)(r)
Using the CPAN method will just introduce files in your file system which will be impossible to keep track of later. If you are using redhat or mandrake, there are a lot of pre-built RPMS already (especially in mandrake cooker). You just need to look for them (via rpmfind.net) download the source rpms and recompile by using rpm --rebuild. I'm sure there is a debian equivalent, right jijo?
