most of the time it is port 23 and 22 coz it gives an automatic shell. IPchains is useless if not configured properly. If you don't have any services to be accessed from the network running on your machine, simply blocked all incoming request. If you do have like apache, you should secure that service. IPchains only concern is the traffic coming in and out of your system, nothing more. Once its in its all upto the application.
