I agree with Rick, perhaps what your friend's instructor meant was the SuSE evaluation 
CDs that can be distributed freely or the FTP version of other releases which btw does 
not offer as much applications as there are in the boxed versions. 

SuSE's approach (I think this was already discussed before in the list) consists of 
mixing Free Software components with proprietary, closed source software to create a 
"hybrid" Linux distribution.
This results in a product that contains mostly Free Software, but because of the mix, 
the final product is released with a proprietary-spirit license.
