Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi everyone,
On Freshmeat, I ran into this program called DSPAM[1] by the Network
Dweebs Corporation. Similar to Bogofilter, it uses Bayesian filtering.
Unlike Bogofilter, it seems more designed for server-wide deployment,
designed to work as the system's MDA.
It looks pretty interesting, but I haven't tried it out, largely because
there is no Debian package yet, and I don't have time to build one
myself right now.
I'm curious: what do those who have server-wide anti-spam deployments
here use, aside from SpamAssassin (which I already use and am not
interested in me-too's for)? How easy or difficult have they been to set
up and maintain? How effective are they?
Thanks in advance for your time. :)

Ah, yes. That very odd proprietary thing from Prof. Bernstein.
Quoting a couple of entries from
http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/dns-servers :
MaraDNS is a general-purpose, fast, authoritative, caching forwarder, and
recursive resolver server, fully supporting zone transfers, which runs
unprivileged, performs its own chroot, and includes its own
buffer-overflow-resistant string library:
http://www.maradns.org/
pdnsd is a small caching forwarder server with a disk-based cache,
suitable for small networks and workstations:

Apply patches by Paul Rombouts, who is effectively the new maintainer:

1. your serving dns on your port 53, internal address
192.168.1.154, but did you open a hole from your
external (the real ip) to your dns server? You
need responses from the nameservers of the internet
too (probably explains why you can't go to yahoo.com).
..try to port forward both udp/tcp from the outside
world to your dns server if you havent done it yet.
2. I dont understand your localhost zone; your defining
hosts in localhost so it appears yur creating ns.localhost
here. Also your making server154.xxxx.net SOA for localhost,
that doesnt look right.
I suggest leave the defaults for localhost, and make
sure at least caching-nameserver functionality works.
THEN define your own zones separately (if you want your
own zones).
if xxxx.net is yours, its better to put that in a
separate zone of its own. If xxxx.net is not yours
and server154.xxxx.net is yours, then what you want to
probably do is tell them to delagate NS to you so you
can build subdomains under server154.xxxx.net (you'll
need to define your own zone server154.xxxx.net).
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is also wrong, that needs to be gpar.xxxx.net.

bind defaults to listen on every ip add the box has, from what you
posted here it looks like that your dns box is not even connected to the
internet? all you have is the loopback and a private address?

could this be a motherboard problem? im only using MATSONIC.
is there a remedy to this without replacing motherboards or not upgrading

yes you can do that with minimal or no downtime at all.... as of the moment,
i dont know the exact network topology that you have but ill give you a
simple trick to solve your problem... the trick is that since you have a
firewall/NAT installed already.. setup your new firewall/nat and installed
it in your network... i assume that you know already how to NAT and how to
route packets to other network segments... now the scenario is that, a
packet is going to and back from the internet is NAT (old firewall/nat
server) by another NAT (new firewall/nat server).. dont worry about NAT by
another NAT.. what important most is that the end-to-end communication is
working perfectly fine.... after you did that, you can easily remove the
configuration of your old firewall/nat server so that there will be one
firewall/nat server left inside your network and that is your new
fireall/nat server :->

actually, your dns server is trying to resolve the ip address of
www.yahoo.com but the problem is that, the source ip address going to other
name servers is a private ip address (192.168.1.154) which will
automatically drop once entered to another network enterprise (RFC 1918)...
thats the reason why your dns server can not resolve www.yahoo.com
you have two options to solve your problem:
1. aside from binding to a private ip address, your dns server must bind to
a public ip address
2. you can still bind to a private ip address without the public ip address
and use *forwarders dns_ip_address_of_your_isp* and *forward only* options
if and only if the private ip address is routable between your network and
to your isp network...
fooler.

if that the case your isp dns server is not reliable then you need option
number 1

How about RSYNC? You may also want to pair it with HEARTBEAT.
