also try to put your unbootable harddisk to another computer.
or try another kernel on the unbootable computer, a bootdisk probably.
or maybe you're trying to boot a 686 kernel on a 586, or something like that.
or did you compile-in something new with the kernel?
also try reinstalling your kernel, possible corrupt of some bits in harddisk.
