Sorry what I should have said was that the file formats are not "human
readable" rather than compressed. My apologies :-) I am a lazy english man.
Please forgive me I was writing off the top of experiences 10++ years old.
Interestingly enough one of the first programs I wrote for an HP-UX box was
to look at wtmp / utmp for security audit purposes.
