Like the process state codes list in the ps manual page says, state D
means the process is in an uninterruptible sleep, usually because of IO.
This is normal for most processes as they flush certain things out onto
disk, for example, but unless expectedly doing heavy IO should only be
in state D for awhile, after which they should go back to either the S
or R states. A process stuck in state D for extended periods can be bad
news, as I have noticed when on a machine with bad RAM.
