some time ago, when i was happily working on my linux box using GNOME as my desktop environment, the power/electricity provider we were subscribed to didn't want to cooperate, and issued unpredicatable power outtages and surges.
now, for the linux desktop i am using (a PII 500 Mhz dating back to circa 1998/1999) these outtages seemed to be normal occurences and linux handled them fine (of course, when the power went back).
however, as these outtages became frequent, and usually came during certain I/O bound operations like disk read and writes, something went wrong. upon the next boot up (when the power was back on), GNOME 2 would start for my normal user, but then cause the system to thrash and eventually render it unusable (right at the point after the gnome splash screen shows).
i then was convinced by my sister to use KDE for a change, although much to my unliking, i had to.
i was just wondering, has anybody encountered similar instances where some files may have been damaged due to power outtages?
anyway, because i (and apparently my computer with just 128 MB RAM) was having such a hard time with KDE and its resource requirements, i tried solving the problem of GNOME thrashing the system by removing all the gnome packages from the slackware gnome disk set, and them installing them again.
and apparently, it works! :) now, i'm using GNOME again.
what may have happened here? obviously somehow, i did something right... but i'm still wondering, what may have caused this behavior? would it be safe to assume that this is an irreproducible and freak occurence?
insights would be most welcome.
TIA =)
