as someone pointed out in linux-kernel mailling list,

<qoute>
atefree() is very obviously based on Unix's mfree(),
and atealloc() on
malloc(). atefree()/mfree() even have the *same
leading comment*.  Of
course, there are some changes, but the overall
structure and many of
the details remain.

view soure for ate_utils.c at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/marcelo/linux-2.4/arch/ia64/sn/io/ate_utils.c

search for mfree() at
http://tamacom.com/tour/unix/

even in ANCIENT unix there is code similarity so I
think it's worth looking specially when they released
it in a BSD-like license, well thats my opinion.
