i don't really know how that might give you slowness (fooler
and others might).  but why not either disable the interface
("ifconfig eth0 down" should be sufficient, then check "route"
to see that there are no default routes and routes related to
the lan card's old IP which you just disabled) or remove it
from the computer.  then see if there's an improvement in
your surfing experience.

but again, can you ping your ISP's dialup box or any
box on the other side of that box?  or can you ping
www.yahoo.com?
