the delay was only annoying, not a show stopper :).  
i would just wait and it'd connect eventually.

no.  am on a LAN and there's no activity.

uh.  not sure what that means.  in exports i have something like:

/some_directory  <ipNumberHere>(ro,sync,no_root_squash)

i've got the IP and name in /etc/hosts of server.  but i don't think
the real reverse DNS works.  so it would just time out if that's what
the deal is.  is there any way to disable reverse DNS lookup on
the server?

no.  tested with all policies set to accept and no nat.  still slow.
