I'm more of a programmer than a sysadmin and I find Slackware the perfect
programmer's distro. Programmers *should* understand and preferably
directly deal with the dependencies of the projects they want to hack on.
In practice, the process of 'hunting down' dependencies is very educational
and is actually very little hassle. I've installed some packages with many
fairly deep dependencies - like SDL - in Slackware and I've /never/ found
myself wishing for any sort of automated dependency management.

hmmm... dependencies can be determined by the "./configure" script when building from source or by issuing an "ldd" command on the binary which will state the libraries that were linked.

but how about determining the applications that are being piped, etc
by a binary? reading the binary dump might help.
