hmmm... dependencies can be determined by the "./configure" script
when building from source or by issuing an "ldd" command on the
binary which will state the libraries that were linked.

I usually determine the dependencies of a package by reading its docs. I would consider a package that did not mention which libraries it uses to be quite poorly documented - it's usually an indication that the author itself does not know his/her stuff very well.
