ah, just tested that.  you're absolutely right.  if i turn
portmap off, it takes a long time to mount (what's
it doing?  probing ports? it mounts eventually,
after all).

thanks for the pointer.  it's a good thing to remember for
other installations.  it works now though, since i did
enable portmap (because i tend to share files in both
directions, something i didn't think of before).  

i probably disabled it previously because, well, portmap 
used to be a source of insecurity (it probably still is, 
haven't heard of any new issues though) and i just turn 
off all services i don't think i'll be using.

huh, the Linux NFS howto even says that portmap, lockd
and statd need to be running ON THE CLIENT.  i didn't
understand that when i was reading it though.  i thought
it meant that they should be running on the server.
