The critical question is how easy would it be to merge the code from
SAPdb into MySQL. Would it bloat MySQL to the point where it is
no longer lean and mean (compared to 3.x, MySQL 4.x is already a lot
fatter)? Would it add features that would take away MySQL's "plug
and play" ease of use?

Can you tell me what is it with Firebird that you found less than
satisfactory? Was it speed? Reliability?

I have used Firebird in small to medium sized databases and have
no performance or reliability gripes, but I'm very interested
in other people's experiences.

Footprint-wise, Firebird is the smallest of them all (and yet is
more feature-complete than MySQL). v1.5 now has an embedded version
which comes in the form of a 1.5MB dll (for Linux, it's probably a
shared object of similar size). This makes deployment of off-the-shelf
non client/server apps that use Firebird as a 'desktop database' a
snap.

Last time I checked, MySQL replication functionality was token and quite
primitive. Real replication should be completely hands-off. It should
work something like this:

Two DBMS servers running. Disconnect one from the network (say the
server has a hardware problem). Fix it and connect it to the
network again. The replication software sees the other server and
proceeds to automatically copy over the new information in the mirrored
database.

PostgreSQL does not have built-in replication, but the 3rd-party offerings
should be more sophisticated than MySQL's built-in one.
