hi all,

at some point, i noted that Samba access on my network was very
slow compared to NFS. this was when I was using mandrake 9.0.

i tested again (both servers Mandrake 9.1) and i find that for copying a
bunch of files (same files, the buffer is essentially cleared between tests
because i read a *lot* of other files between tests), it takes around
54 seconds for NFS and around 80 seconds for Samba.

the difference isn't as bad as i thought. so it was probably misconfiguration
back when i was still using mandrake 9.0 that made samba incredibly
slow (almost too slow to use, really).

there might still be some misconfiguration now. uh, the times given above
are with prelude running on the server (the same box is server for nfs and
smb).

without prelude i have:

54 seconds for NFS (hmmm, no diff :), and 82 seconds for Samba. yep,
I guess there is definitely a difference, just not as much as i thought.

this is with filesharing (both) using essentially the defaults. i haven't
done anything to optimize because i don't need to.

the data set, by the way, was 58Mb or so. i'm on a laptop and i only
get around 10mbps. one of these days i'll test on two desktops at 100mbps.
the difference doesn't seem to be due to the 10/100 Mbps differential
(the server can do 100Mbps) since the difference between Samba and
NFS is consistent.
