Fellow PLUGgers, Someone on the Debian developers' mailing list posted this link[1] to very rough benchmarks comparing Gentoo with an i386 distribution (Debian "Testing") and an i586 distribution (Mandrake). It's not the most scientific, but I think it drives a very neat point across: Gentoo is not necessarily that much faster. ;)
