this might depend on your distribution (i only use mandrake, i've used
redhat and slackware in the past, but this was *long* ago, i've also
used freebsd [many versions], but that would be offtopic).

on most linuxes (i'm guessing, anyway, on mine), you need to save
/etc/shadow*. the passwords are there. for simplicity, i'd save all
of /etc.

you will need to save where all the unread email is stored. that depends
on your distribution. what SMTP server does your server use? on my
box, i need to save /var/spool/mail and /var/spool/postfix and maybe a bunch
of other directories [depends on your setup].

if you want to, you could save /home i guess. depends on whether you give
people shell access. or if you're the only one with shell access, if you want
to save your downloads and other stuff in your home directory :).

if you tell the list what distribution you use, maybe someone using the same
distribution and SMTP/POP2-3/IMAP server will be able to help you.

good luck.
