I think for all intents and purposes messages like this should go to
PH-Linux-Newbie instead of here. Aside from the obvious answers, which
include:
$ gcc -v
$ gcc --version
I think a very important reminder is to read the manual page,
information page, or at the least, the "help output" for any program you
already know of. From the gcc(1) manual page:
--version
Display the version number and copyrights of the invoked GCC.
And then of course you can use RPM to find out what version of gcc you
have installed as far the RedHat package management system is concerned.
I don't run RedHat, but `man rpm` will tell you how to query the RPM
database to find out what version of some package you have installed,
and more.
Another nifty application is apropos(1), which searches manual page
names and descriptions for keywords. Can't remember what command is used
to compile your program?
$ apropos compiler
...
gcc (1) - GNU project C and C++ Compiler (gcc-2.95)
gcc-2.95 (1) - GNU project C and C++ Compiler (gcc-2.95)
gcc-3.3 (1) - GNU project C and C++ compiler
...
I encourage everyone to learn to use apropos(1), the manual and
information pages, and Google. While it's very easy to ask on friendly
mailing lists like this, I think we also miss out on opportunities to
learn how to do things on our own.
As it is things are just an apropos, man, info, or Google away these
days. While working at Infophil.COM I chanced upon their mini-library
there, which contained a copy of the original deadtree UNIX manuals. I
wonder how it felt to have to leaf through those instead of just
clickety-clicking away.
