Well... it seems that it actually depends on the build that you're
using. Mozilla and Firebird can be built to use GTK 1.x or GTK 2. So
he's probably using a build that depends on GTK 1 that's why changing
font preferences under Gnome 2 has no effect.

What I mean is  the control panel applet for changing fonts in Gnome 1
is not included with Red Hat 8.x and above. It's probably not included
in Debian if you have not previously installed Gnome 1 before you have
installed Gnome 2. I don't know, I'm not a Debian user. :)
