Madam Janis says:

Installing over the compiler that comes with your distribution is
     generally not a good idea.

:-)

it probably wasn't overwriting the compiler that messed you up,
but overwriting the libraries. the version of rpm that came with
rh7.2 likely has dependencies/interactions with bugs, misfeatures,
or quirks in the glibc that came with rh7.2. and by installing a
new glibc you removed those dependencies. can you
install the old glibc again?

since you can't use rpm to backout, maybe you could get the
sources for the redhat version of the old glibc, and build from
source? on the other hand, since you installed a new gcc too,
you might just be digging a deeper hole into which to dive.
any chance of upgrading? or take half a day to backup,
reinstall rh 7.2, then restore from backup?

or find a different rh 7.2 box, figure out from the rpm what files
you need, and copy those files manually?

good luck.
