If the file system is Dos or Windows, try using Spinrite.  

If you suspect that the problem is a mis-aligned cylinder head and if
the data is not that important but you would like to get the data if you
could, then why not try gently slapping your drive on a table.  This is
very unconventional and would normally destroy a good hard drive but I
have heard a lot of stories that it sometimes work enough for you to be
able to get your data.  I have no personal experience with this though. 
But if you do try it and it works then please do tell us.
