our services are the same, but we are not able to
locally connect to each other, neither can we ping
ourselves. how is that possible?

you cannot connect through local network in different area, you must use their public ip addr. to be able to connect to their site or vise-versa.

try usingip aliasing if you want to connect to other network - [ eg ifconfig eth0:0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ] but be careful not to conflict other ip to other network.
it works for me.
